Final COMP Cams Engine Builder Duel Of 2015 Takes Place During Fall Street Machine Nationals
09/29/2015 3:05:58 PM
The COMP Cams Engine Builder Duel series concluded this weekend at the Fall Street Machine Nationals in Springfield, Missouri. The two-day event hosted two head-to-head builder competitions on Saturday, and one on Sunday. All three pairs of teams were evenly matched, and the times were close. As always, even though one team may be trying to start their engine first, that never means it’s over. Incorrect timing and other mistakes can allow opponents to catch up.
The first match of Saturday morning, September 26, was a pair of husband-and-wife teams. Friends in hot rodding, the couples battled head to head for bragging rights, and both did surprisingly well. Joe and Jennifer Kossen were on Team COMP®, and assembled their Small Bock Chevy in 44:59, but were just a few minutes shy of their competition, Chris and Amy Smith of Team FAST™, who assembled theirs in 41:03.

The second round pitted Mike and Kristi Parr against Richard Schofield and his 15-year-old son Jacob. It was Jacob’s first engine build. The Parrs got their engine assembled and running before the father-and-son team, but they encountered a bit of ignition trouble in the distributor area. In trying to get their engine to run for the required thirty second they were passed by Richard and Jacob, although both engines ended up running at the same time. Officials deemed it a tie, and both pairs went home winners. Young Jacob was recently given a Ford pickup truck, and was excited to receive the COMP Cams® gift certificate. The times were 43:19 for Team Parr and 44:01 for the Schofields.

Sunday, September 27’s lone showdown was a bit more fast-paced thanks to two evenly matched sets of engine-building skills. The father-and-son team of Allen and Nick Marcinek on Team COMP® took on the husband-and-wife team of Jared and Megan Petersen competing for Team FAST™. Megan often helps Jared tear engines down, and knew her way around the wrenches. In the end the Marcineks set the event’s lowest time of 30:48, besting the Petersens, who weren’t far behind with a 32:08.

The Engine Builder Duel has been held for the last eight years. Surprisingly enough, one of the original engines is still functioning. Catastrophic failures are quite rare thanks to the diligent efforts of the tech inspection crew, headed by Bryan Pitcher. Bryan has overseen all but two events during the program’s lengthy run. As a testament to the durability of the Small Block Chevy, these engines have had more component torque cycles, head swaps, rod and bearing torques, and starts and revs with dirty oil and no coolant more than any other set of engines on the planet, and they continue to educate and inspire hot rodders of all ages. Join us next year for the 9th running of the COMP Cams® Engine Builder Duel at a premier auto event near you.

COMP Cams To Take Part In NASCAR Throwback Program During This Weekend’s Southern 500
09/04/2015 9:23:52 AM
COMP Cams® has been a part of NASCAR for nearly 40 years. This weekend at Darlington Raceway the valve train company will use a special throwback decal to celebrate its heritage alongside a variety of teams, drivers, sponsors and media.
Since its inception in 1976, COMP Cams® has worked with a veritable who’s who in NASCAR, including the likes of Dale Earnhardt, Cale Yarborough, Terry Labonte and many more. In fact, Buddy Baker was even running a COMP® camshaft when he turned in the fastest Daytona 500 ever recorded with his Waddell Wilson-prepared “Gray Ghost” in 1980. Today COMP Cams® is the Official Camshaft Manufacturer of NASCAR, and the brand’s decals adorn the front fenders of nearly every car running in each and every NASCAR series.

The return of this weekend’s Southern 500 to its traditional Labor Day date provides a perfect opportunity for COMP® to bring back a retro decal, and even a retro name. Darlington viewers this week will see a white “Competition Cams” decal in an old-school, script-style font instead of the brand’s familiar red, black and white logo with an integrated checkered flag. The timing of the throwback program is perfect for COMP Cams®, as the Memphis-based company will be celebrating its 40th anniversary in 2016. A number of events are planned to celebrate the valve train leader’s fascinating history, including its longstanding partnership with NASCAR and its unique personalities.

COMP Cams Engine Builder Duel Rolls On To The St. Paul Street Machine Nationals
07/01/2015 2:44:18 PM
Minnesota is known for its nice people, plentiful gophers, bountiful lakes, and more recently, fast engine builders. The COMP Cams® Engine Builder Duel will test Upper Midwest gearheads’ knowledge and quickness again this summer, as the popular competition returns to the St. Paul Street Machine Nationals on July 17-19.
Each year the Minnesota State Fairgrounds in Minnesota’s capital city of St. Paul plays host to thousands of performance vehicles and automotive enthusiasts during the Street Machine Nationals. The COMP Cams® Engine Builder Duel has become a cornerstone of the event, and last year the fastest build in the history of the competition was recorded in the North Star State. Jim Schmittinger and Jesse Nelson assembled and fired their engine in a time of just 20:59, shattering their previous best time. While the record seems unattainable, a number of the blistering-fast engine builders have their sights set on lowering that number even further.

Four competitions are scheduled throughout the weekend, with the first taking place on Friday, July 17, at 3 p.m. Two more Duels will be held at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. on Saturday, July 18, and the final contest kicks off at 11 a.m. on Sunday, July 19. During each competition two-person teams go head-to-head to determine which one can assemble and fire a Small Block Chevy in the shortest amount of time. Engines are required to run for 30 seconds. The quickest builders each win $250 COMP Cams® product certificates, while the runners up receive $125 COMP® certificates. To register, email enginebuilderduel@gmail.com. SIU Students Highlight COMP Cams Engine Builder Duel During Du Quoin Street Machine Nationals
07/01/2015 10:48:25 AM
Some of the nation’s best engine builders participate in the popular COMP Cams Engine Builder Duel. During the Du Quoin Street Machine Nationals, some future performance leaders proved that they are already very good at their craft.
Four COMP Cams® Engine Builder Duel contests took place in Du Quoin on the weekend of June 26-28, and students from the Southern Illinois University Automotive Technology Organization competed in all of them. When the dust settled, the SIU students pooled their winnings and raised over $1,700 in COMP® certificates to use toward their program’s Chevrolet C10 drag racing truck. The project is completely funded by donations.

In the Engine Builder Duel, two-person teams race to assemble and fire a Small Block Chevy engine in the shortest amount of time. Engines must run for 30 seconds, and participants may not receive help from anyone in the audience. The winners of each competition receive $250 COMP Cams® certificates, while runners-up are entitled to $125 COMP® certificates. In Du Quoin, the teams were named each day for COMP Cams® and its sister brand, EFI leader FAST™.

With the first scheduled Duel falling to weather in Du Quoin on the event’s Friday date, the program kicked off on Saturday morning, June 27. SIU students Calvin Lohring and Dan Wereminski of Team COMP® turned in a time of 37:46 to narrowly defeat classmates Ryan Hoelscher and Mac Morehead representing Team FAST™ by just over one minute. Ryan and Mac are Ford enthusiasts who amazingly had never built a Chevy engine.

That afternoon, two more pairs of Southern Illinois students took center stage. Paul Borus and Quincy Shiff of Team COMP® completed their build in 39:57 and defeated Team FAST™ representatives Paul Wereminski and Hannah Lamb, who finished their engine in 49:44.

Finally, on Sunday morning, June 28, SIU students Ryan Hoelscher and Mac Morehead returned to represent Team COMP® and completed their build in 35:36. However, they were bested by Tony Mifflin and Kenny Hale of Team FAST™ – engine builders of 30 years who turned in a blistering time of 24:57.

The next COMP Cams® Engine Builder Duel is scheduled for the St. Paul Street Machine Nationals in Minnesota from July 17-19. To register, email enginebuilderduel@gmail.com. For more information on the program, visit www.enginebuilderduel.com.

For the last three editions of the Hot Rod Power Tour, the COMP Performance Group™ (CPG) has randomly awarded a $10,000 product certificate to a Long Hauler who has creatively promoted the CPG brands throughout the seven-day road trip. In 2015 the big money went to veteran Long Hauler Andy Goin of Heth, Arkansas.

From the first day of Power Tour in Wisconsin until its final day in Louisiana, the COMP Performance Group™ staff scoured the grounds at each stop in search of Long Haulers who were actively supporting and promoting the CPG brands in creative ways. Brands included COMP Cams®, FAST™, TCI®, RHS®, Quarter Master®, Inglese™, ZEX™ and Powerhouse® Products.  Those participants who were deemed worthy were presented with a Golden Ticket that entered them in a random drawing on the tour’s last day for a $10,000 COMP Performance Group™ product certificate. In all 17 Golden Tickets were passed out, and when the dust settled Andy Goin was left holding the big check.

Andy drove a 1987 GMC Sierra during the tour, which he plans to outfit with a new COMP Cams® roller valve train setup and a FAST EZ-EFI® system. He also has a 1969 Mustang project which is going to be the recipient of some new COMP Performance Group™ go-fast goodies.  To be entered in the Golden Ticket contest, Andy wore a novelty hat with rabbit ears, a signboard and a cutout of a hand giving a high five. He also turned a COMP Cams® banner into a flag which he carried and waved each day.

“The rabbit ears on the hat were for the Thumprcam, my wife made it,” he explained. “I just thought the board and the hand would be kind of unique to go along with that.”

A banner signed by each Long Hauler was given away on the last day as well. The winner was Australian Grand Huskin, who had his 1973 Ford Falcon shipped from his home country for this year’s event.

Two new valve spring kits from COMP Cams® allow 0.550" or .600" lift as well as higher RPM and boost in late model Ford Coyote applications.
Ford enthusiasts have two brand new valve spring options for late model Coyote engines. COMP Cams® Ford Coyote Valve Spring Kits are designed to create higher load, RPM and lift capacity for 2011-2014 and 2015 and later Ford Coyote and Boss 5.0L engines in both N/A and boosted applications. An increase in load can handle more lift, which allows the engine to make more power. These Ford Coyote Valve Spring Kits also provide increased valve control over stock springs—especially at high RPM—thanks to a performance-driven design and proven modular engine track record. The springs also allow for higher boost without concern for loss of valve control. Each kit includes springs plus matching titanium or tool steel retainers, seats and seals, letting anyone upgrade their Coyote or Boss valve springs without having to guess which parts to use together. COMP Cams® Ford Coyote Valve Spring Kits are required with all-new, high-lift CY cams on 2011-2014 non-Boss heads. They include springs, retainers, seats and seals.
