Go-Parts™
Extended Lifter Installation Instructions For Briggs & Stratton™
5 HP Engines
The
installation of a high lift camshaft will cause the lifter heads
to make contact with the bottom of the block's lifter bore area
if material has not been removed. These steps will guide you through
the process of removing interfering material from the engine block
to create the necassary clearance.
Go-Parts™
extended lifters are designed for use in Briggs and Stratton™ 5
HP modified Kart and Jr. Dragster racing engines. These one piece
precision lifters are CNC machined from high grade tool steel. They
are 0.100" longer than the Briggs and Stratton stock lifters
for high lift, small base circle camshafts. Go-Parts™ extended lifters
are available in a 1.000" head diameter for limited modified
engines and 0.950" head diameter for long stroke and/or long
connecting rod engines.
Note:
Remember that your goal is a hi-performance racing engine, it is
in your best interest to follow these instructions. By not following
these simple steps, you may reduce horsepower, efficiency, and the
performance of your engine.
-
We
will assume at this point that you have disassembled the engine.
Make sure to use proper eye-protection.
-
Install
the Go-Parts™ extended lifters and high lift camshaft dry.
-
Slowly
turn the camshaft over until the intake or exhaust lifter contacts
the bottom of the lifter bore area of the block. Determine the
amount of material that needs to be removed from the block to
clearance your new lifters.
Tip: To obtain a good view of the lifter bore area, look
through the Go-Parts™ billet cam gear with a flashlight.
-
Remove
the camshaft and lifters. Remove the desired amount of material
from the bottom of the lifter bore area using a
grinder
with porting tools
or with a
valve
seat cutter
(with the cutter inverted).
-
Use
compressed air to blow debris from the engine, and clean any
metallic residue.
-
Re-install
the camshaft and lifters to check for clearance. Remove more
material if necassary, but only enough to provide clearance.
-
Reinstall
the crankcase cover and gasket, then torque bolts to the required
setting. Slowly rotate the engine by hand to insure that no
internal components are touching. Listen closely for noise as
you rotate the engine.
-
Perform
any other necessary maintenance to your engine, thoroughly clean,
lubricate and reassemble the engine.
-
On
long stroke and connecting rod engines, use the Go-Parts™
0.950"
head diameter lifter
. Always be sure to double check all clearance of internal components
before firing the engine.
-
Once
you have the necessary clearance, you will want to set the
valve lash
.
-
If
you can't get the desired clearance, call us toll-free at 1-800-976-9376
for assistance.
